Signs that tell us it’s time to tinker with our plumbing

Plumbing is a very serious factor for homeowners; it’s a medium for delivering one of our most important necessities for a home: water. Dirty water, property loss damage, loss of furnishings, and a spike in the water bill can come from poor maintenance of any part of the plumbing of our homes. If you’ve been living in an old house for years, or bought an old home off the hands of a moving owner, there is a great chance that the plumbing of the house you’re getting into is outdated. Here are the few signs to keep an eye out for outdated plumbing:

Corrosion

Brown water bursting out the sink is a sign that your plumbing is ages old, and requires immediate attention. This problem leads to various others if left untreated, like clogging and causing pipes to burst, which then leads to destruction in your own home.

Leaking

This can be a monstrous inconvenience. Leaking is an indication of a loose or ineffective security of your piping. Be sure to check under sinks or dishwashers, or in any position of the house where piping is often located.

Low water pressure

Low water pressure indicates a blockage or leak in the piping system of the house. It can be quite difficult to actually know the cause of low water pressure at first glance. It may be that the water pressure for the whole house has been set and lowered with nothing actually amiss. However, it can also be a sign that it’s time to fix up your pipes and plumbing.

A reminder to keep in mind for your plumbing enhancements

Before doing anything else, it’s important to have knowledge of piping material when replacing pipes. There are different types of pipes, each having their own pros and cons:

Cast iron and brass – these last for 80 to 100 years but still corrodes over time

Copper – 70-80 years. Less expensive, but can be damaged easily

Stee l – 50 years, and corrodes over time

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – 25-40 years with strong durability against heat and chemicals

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) – joints easily loosen. Lasts as long as PVC

Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX): offers ease in installation but more expensive than PVC

It’s always best to prevent problems than struggling to look for a way to solve it. A compromised piping system can cause physical damages to your house, and financial damage to your wallet. So keep an eye out and maintain your piping to keep your house healthy and your pocket full!
