How to Save Money in Kitchen Remodeling

Plan ahead

Plan everything in full detail. Make a plan with the existing kitchen and wall configuration in mind, thus keeping most of the electrical and plumbing systems intact. In this way, you’ll minimize the cost during tear-out and construction.

Hiring a professional designer may mean you have to pay about 10% of the total cost of the project; however, you’ll actually be able to save more in the long run since encountering problems become less likely.

Purchase the Cabinets, Appliances, and Lighting Fixtures

Keep in mind that it may take four to six weeks for the cabinets to be delivered. You can order them ahead of time after the plan is completed and store them in a spare room.  When choosing the appliances, make sure that they fit the size and design of the cabinet. If you still can’t afford to buy new ones, you can keep the old ones and just replace them later when the budget permits.

You’ll also be able to save money if you reuse the light fittings. If you’re still fine with them, then reuse them.

plumbingIf the flooring runs underneath the cabinet, you’ll have the option to choose a new cabinet configuration. If you plan to cover or replace your old flooring, remember that the thickness will affect the height of your floor.

Electrical and Plumbing Work

During this stage, keep in contact with your contractor so they’ll be able to answer questions and clear up any problems. Since major remodeling of a kitchen may take 6-10 weeks, you should move your kitchen appliances to another room so you’ll still be able to cook meals.

Install everything

If you already have the key components and ordered the cabinets and appliances ahead of time, this stage should be easy. A high-end countertop can be costly, if you still can’t afford it, you can use painted marine plywood for the mean time. You can just upgrade it later on.

Necessary upgrades

If you already have the much-needed budget, you can go ahead and do some upgrades. Replace the countertop, change the flooring or buy new appliances.
